Google will now show labels in Play Store to denote official government apps (techcrunch.com)

Is this an admission by Google they fail to screen for impersonation of government's apps, and that they are at the time of the article continuing to fail on this curation for all but 14 jurisdictions?

To be fair to Google, sometimes the genuine apps are uploaded in such a way that you wouldn't be able to differentiate them (for example, contracted apps that are uploaded under the developer's account and not on a government-controlled account). This is laughable if you're talking about major national entities but falls apart quickly on subnational entites (e.g. municipal governments) and on developing nations.

I am amazed this wasn't implemented during the pandemic at the latest.

Good change to see though, even if it isn't in my country yet. Hopefully other app stores follow suit. Clicking on the "government" icon to get a list of other apps by the same government would be a nice addition too, like you can do by clicking on the publisher name.

2024 the technology is finally there! Wow!
