The Life and Death of Hollywood: Film and TV writers face an existential threat (harpers.org)

Turns out that the prospect of a career change is a large problem and a threat to your mortgage, but not existential.

Hasn't Hollywood always tried to treat its writers and wanna-be's like sh*t?

As the start of the article spells out quite well, there's a massive oversupply of young people who yearn to write for plays, TV shows, movies, etc. Vs. the total demand for their services is pretty d*mned limited.

But long-odds and delusional dreams are somehow forgivable if the endeavor is somehow artistic. Vs. if I yearned to be an 8-track tape repairman, or play in the NBA, or marry a British Princess...and could not pay my bills as a result - "d'oh, what did you expect, idiot?".
