The Star Trek link is because Trek writer Joe Menosky is a Pomona graduate, and started to include references to the number 47 (and the reverse, 74) in his scripts, starting in TNG season 4, and it started to take off amongst the staff.

Definitely. Occasional verbal references were fine, I appreciated more the subtle little visual references in LCARs interfaces etc more that in dialogue.
